Commentary
Water on the mountain parts before the majesty of an imperial progress. The Yellow Emperor sets out on a grand tour, riding dragons and driving horses. Ascending Mount Tai in the east, passing through the lands of Qi and Lu in the south, every commandery and kingdom rejoices at his approach. This verse invokes the primordial sovereign's inspection journey — the mythic template for all later imperial tours — where the ruler's presence consecrates the landscape and renews the bond between heaven and the people. From Obstruction to Pushing Upward, wood grows within the earth in steady, incremental ascent. The Yellow Emperor's tour is Pushing Upward made visible: a sovereign force that rises through the realm, gathering allegiance and spreading order as it climbs from the eastern mountain through the southern plains.
