Yilin Verse

植根不固,華葉落去,便為枯樹。

Roots planted without firmness; blossoms and leaves fall away, becoming a dead tree.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Water on the mountain erodes the roots that should hold firm. A tree whose roots are not securely planted loses its flowers and leaves, and quickly becomes a dead stump. Three phrases — no more — deliver a complete trajectory of decline: weak foundation, lost vitality, irreversible death. The tree's root system is the hidden structure that determines whether the visible canopy thrives or withers. From Obstruction to The Cauldron, fire blazes above wind as the vessel of transformation refines its contents. The Cauldron depends on a stable base — its three legs must bear the weight of what it holds. The rootless tree is the Cauldron without legs: it cannot sustain the transformative process, and what should have been refined is instead lost. Establishment must precede transformation, or nothing endures.
