Yilin Verse
竊名盜位,居非其家。霜隕不實,為陰所賊。
Stealing a name, usurping a seat; dwelling in a house not his own. Frost falls, the fruit does not ripen; yin wickedness devours him.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder over water gathers into the lake upon the earth — but the gathering of Gathering Together here is fraudulent. One steals a reputation and usurps a position, dwelling in a house that is not one's own. Frost falls and the fruit does not ripen; yin forces have sabotaged everything. The verse describes an impostor: someone occupying a role through deceit rather than merit, and the natural consequence of that illegitimacy — nothing comes to fruition under a false steward. From Deliverance to Gathering, the release from crisis creates a power vacuum that the unworthy rush to fill. Frost kills the fruit that a true occupant would have nurtured to harvest.
