Yilin Verse

樂仁上德,東鄰慕義,來安吾國。

Delighting in benevolence, esteeming virtue; the eastern neighbor admires righteousness and comes to bring peace to our state.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Mountain above lake gives way to heaven above fire — Fellowship. The people delight in benevolence and prize virtue; the eastern neighbor admires righteousness and comes willingly to bring peace to the realm. No force compels them, no treaty binds them — moral gravity alone draws them in. The verse depicts the ideal of soft power in its purest form: a state so virtuous that neighboring peoples migrate toward it of their own accord. From Decrease to Fellowship, the mountain's restraint over the lake transforms into heaven's natural kinship with fire. Fire rises toward heaven as if drawn by affinity, just as the eastern neighbor is drawn by shared values. Decrease's self-discipline becomes the magnetic center of voluntary alliance.
