Yilin Verse

戴堯扶禹,松喬彭祖。西過王母,道路夷易,无敢難者。

Upholding Yao, supporting Yu; Chisong and Pengzu. Journeying west past the Queen Mother; the road smooth and easy, none daring to hinder.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Mountain above lake yields to doubled fire — the Clinging, brilliance continuing brilliance. The verse invokes the greatest names of sage-kingship and immortality: upheld by Yao's virtue and supported by Yu's labor, accompanied by the immortals Chisongzi and Pengzu, passing westward beyond the Queen Mother of the West. The road is smooth and easy; nothing dares obstruct. This is a triumphal procession through the entire moral and mythological cosmos. From Decrease to the Clinging, the mountain's restraint transforms into doubled illumination — fire upon fire, clarity compounded. Decrease here operates as the shedding of mortal limitation: stripped of earthly weight, one moves freely among sages and immortals, the path made luminous by their combined radiance.
