Yilin Verse

蓄積有餘,糞土不居。美哉輪奐,出有高車。

Stores accumulated in surplus; dung and filth do not linger. How fine, how splendid the halls; going out, there is a grand carriage.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Mountain above lake transforms into lake above heaven — Breakthrough, where accumulated water bursts upward in decisive release. Stores overflow with surplus; filth and dross have no place to settle. 'How magnificent, how splendid!' — the phrase echoes the Zuo Zhuan's praise of grand architecture. One rides forth in a high carriage. The verse celebrates abundance so complete that waste is expelled and beauty takes its place. From Decrease to Breakthrough, the lake rises above heaven in a surge of decisive action. Breakthrough's image is the lake gathered high above, ready to pour down. Decrease's patient accumulation has filled the reservoir to bursting; now the dam breaks and wealth flows outward. The splendid carriage is the visible reward of long restraint finally released.
