Yilin Verse

堂祥上樓,與福俱居。席地妃治,國安无憂。

Auspicious omens ascend the hall; dwelling together with fortune. The consort seated, the realm well-governed; the state is peaceful, without worry.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Mountain above lake yields to thunder above fire — Abundance, where illumination and action combine at their peak. Auspicious omens ascend to the upper story; fortune takes up residence alongside the household. The consort governs with grace from her rightful seat; the state rests secure and free from worry. The verse envisions political abundance through proper domestic order — the consort in her place, blessings accumulating upward. From Decrease to Abundance, the mountain gives way to thunder and the lake ignites as fire — the maximum intensity of both movement and clarity. Decrease's restraint has cleared the way for this culmination: by sacrificing excess, the household arrives at the fullness that Abundance represents. Thunder and lightning together illuminate and animate; nothing is wasted, nothing is lacking.
