Yilin Verse

桃雀竊脂,巢於小枝。動搖不安,為風所吹。寒恐悚慄,常憂殆危。

The sparrow steals fat; nesting on a slender branch. Swaying, never at rest; blown about by the wind. Cold, shivering with fright; ever worrying over peril.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Mountain above lake gives way to wind above water — Dispersion, where cohesion dissolves and structures scatter. A sparrow steals grease, nesting on a slender branch. Swaying unsteadily, buffeted by wind, it shivers with cold and dread, forever anxious about danger. The image is exquisitely precarious: the tiny bird perches on a twig too thin to hold it, clutching stolen sustenance, rocked by every gust. From Decrease to Dispersion, the mountain crumbles and the lake fragments into water blown apart by wind. The sparrow's predicament embodies Dispersion perfectly: nothing holds together, nothing is secure. Decrease has stripped away the stable perch, and what remains is a creature clinging to a branch that the next wind will break, consumed by the very anxiety it sought to escape through theft.
