Commentary
Wind and thunder bestow increase, and the transformation leads to earth above the lake — the authoritative approach of the sovereign in Approach. Generals Dai, Ji, Er, and Liang understood the art of war and the calculus of power. They led their forces into battle, and no enemy could withstand them; thus Zhao and Wei grew mighty. These names likely refer to accomplished commanders of the Warring States period whose combined military acumen secured dominance for the allied states of Zhao and Wei. From Increase to Approach, the transformation shows how augmented power, when wielded by those who truly understand strategy, creates an irresistible advance. Earth overarches the lake: the sovereign descends to oversee directly, and the generals who serve with both courage and calculation ensure that approach becomes conquest.
