Yilin Verse
四目相視,稍近同機。日昳之後,見吾伯姊。
Four eyes gaze at each other, drawing near in shared purpose. After the sun has passed its zenith, I meet my elder sister.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind and thunder bestow increase, and the transformation leads to clouds rising above heaven — the patience of Waiting. Four eyes meet in mutual gaze, drawing imperceptibly closer toward a shared moment. After the sun passes its zenith and begins to decline, the speaker finally meets their elder sister. The 'four eyes gazing' suggests two people recognizing each other across distance, gradually converging. The timing is precise: the reunion happens in the afternoon, when the day's waiting has been fulfilled. From Increase to Waiting, the verse illustrates that beneficial encounters require patience and ripening. The clouds gather above heaven but the rain has not yet fallen; the connection is real, but it arrives only when the moment is ripe.
