Yilin Verse

隨時逐便,不失利門。多獲得福,富於封君。

Following the times and seizing advantage, never missing the gate of profit. Gaining fortune in abundance, wealthier than an enfeoffed lord.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind and thunder bestow increase, and the transformation leads to heaven and water moving in opposing directions — the tension of Conflict. Yet the verse speaks of seizing every opportunity as it arises, never missing the gate of profit, accumulating wealth surpassing that of an enfeoffed lord. This is the merchant or strategist who reads the currents of fortune and rides them deftly. 'Following the time and chasing convenience' echoes the Yijing counsel to act in accord with the moment. From Increase to Conflict, the dynamic reveals a paradox: precisely because opposing forces create friction, the shrewd operator profits from the turbulence. Where heaven and water move against each other, the one who plans carefully at the outset turns contention itself into a source of abundance.
