Yilin Verse
天孫帝子,與日月處。光榮於世,福祿祉祉。
Heaven's grandson, the emperor's child, dwelling with the sun and moon. Glorious renown across the world; blessings and fortune abound.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Lake risen above heaven flows into the lake where thunder rests. The verse invokes 'heaven's grandchild and the emperor's child' — celestial descendants who dwell alongside sun and moon, radiating glory across the world, blessed with inexhaustible fortune. The language suggests the Weaver Maid and other stellar deities of Han cosmology, beings whose luminous station guarantees perpetual blessing. From Breakthrough to Following, decisive action dissolves into willing alignment with natural rhythm. Thunder rests within the lake at dusk, and the gentleman retires to rest — Following means adapting to the moment's call. The celestial heir does not force his glory; it emanates from his station, and others follow the light as naturally as day follows night.
