Yilin Verse

始加元服,二十繫室。新婚既樂,伯季有得。

First receiving the capping ceremony; at twenty, establishing a household. Newly wed and joyful; the eldest and youngest all prosper.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Lake risen above heaven is gathered into the mountain that stores heaven within. A young man first receives his ceremonial cap — the 'yuan fu' or capping rite marking adulthood at twenty. He then establishes his household in marriage. The newlyweds rejoice, and both elder and younger brothers share in the good fortune. The capping ceremony and wedding follow in proper sequence: maturity confirmed, then family founded, then sibling bonds strengthened. From Breakthrough to Great Taming, the decisive act of cutting away what is corrupt transforms into the patient accumulation of virtue and knowledge. Heaven stored within the mountain represents power held in reserve, cultivated over time. The young man's rites of passage mark the beginning of that lifelong project of self-taming.
