Yilin Verse

南國盛茂,黍稷醴酒。可以饗養,樂我嘉友。

The southern land flourishes; millet and grain yield sweet wine. Enough to feast and nourish; to delight our cherished friends.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Lake risen above heaven brightens into doubled fire, light upon light. The southern lands flourish with lush growth; millet and grain fill the granaries; fine ale and wine flow freely. These offerings nourish and delight cherished friends. The imagery is a harvest feast in the warm south — abundance shared generously among companions. From Breakthrough to the Clinging, the single decisive stroke gives way to the steady radiance of sustained illumination. Fire doubled means clarity that perpetuates itself, great men whose virtue shines in succession across the four directions. The southern richness is not hoarded but distributed in fellowship, each cup of wine another act of light extending itself outward.
