Yilin Verse

山石朽破,消崩墮墜。上下離心,君受其祟。

The mountain stone rots and crumbles, wearing away and falling down. Above and below part in heart; the lord suffers its curse.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Lake risen above heaven crumbles as the wind infiltrates from below. Mountain rocks decay and shatter, eroding and tumbling downward. Above and below lose trust in each other; the ruler suffers the consequences. The geological imagery is precise: weathered stone breaks apart under its own weight, cascading in landslide. This collapse mirrors the political body — when the bond between ruler and ministers fractures, the structure disintegrates from within. From Breakthrough to Coming to Meet, the decisive expulsion of the single yin line reverses: the yin line now enters from below, uninvited. Coming to Meet warns of the dark force that re-infiltrates after being expelled. The verse captures the moment that decisive victory unravels, as the very foundation one stands upon begins to crumble.
