Yilin Verse

兩人俱醉,相與悖戾。心乖不同,爭訟匈匈。

Drinking together at the same table, voices rising. One word of disagreement — the table is overturned. Wine jars shatter, red covers the floor — yesterday's brothers are today's enemies.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind beneath heaven turns convivial encounter into violent rupture. This verse is a rewrite; the original reads: 'Two men both drunk, they grow perverse and contrary. Hearts diverge and disagree; disputes rage fiercely.' The scene is devastatingly simple — drinking companions whose wine-loosened tongues reveal incompatible hearts. What began as shared cups ends in mutual enmity. From Coming to Meet to Breakthrough, the lake rises above heaven in explosive release. Gou's encounter, fueled by alcohol, crosses a threshold that cannot be uncrossed. Breakthrough's image of water overtopping the sky captures the irreversibility: once the quarrel erupts, yesterday's brothers become today's enemies, and no apology can rebottle the spilled wine.
