Yilin Verse

薄為藩蔽,勁風吹卻,欲上不得,復歸其宅。

A thin fence serves as barrier; the fierce wind blows it away. Wishing to ascend but unable; one returns again to one's dwelling.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Lake risen above heaven meets the clouds that gather before heaven. A thin fence serves as shelter, but a fierce wind blows it aside. The climber reaches upward but cannot gain purchase, and falls back to where he started. The barrier is too flimsy to protect, and the ambition too slight for the storm it faces. From Breakthrough to Waiting, decisive action meets the necessity of patience. The cloud hangs above heaven but has not yet released its rain — the moment is not ripe. One who pushes forward against a headwind with only a grass screen for protection will inevitably be driven back. The verse counsels returning home to wait for better conditions rather than spending oneself against an unready sky.
