Yilin Verse
陰陽精液,高熟晚拆。治卵成鬼,肇生頭目。日有大喜。
The vital essences of yin and yang; nurtured at height, splitting late. The gestated egg becomes a spirit; head and eyes begin to form. A day of great rejoicing.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Lake risen above heaven disperses into the gentle taming of wind above heaven. Yin and yang essences mingle; what is high ripens and what is late unfolds. The incubated egg transforms, bringing forth a spirit; eyes and head begin to form. A day of great joy arrives. The imagery traces gestation — cosmic fluids combining, an embryo quickening, features emerging from formlessness. This is creation at its most intimate: the mystery of life assembling itself within the shell. From Breakthrough to Small Taming, the dramatic force of resolution refines into the wind's patient cultivation. The gentle breeze above heaven does not shatter; it shapes and nurtures, allowing what is nascent to develop in its own time.
