Yilin Verse

福祚之家,喜至憂除;如風兼雨,出車入魚。

A house of fortune and blessing; joy arrives and worry departs. Like wind paired with rain; setting forth the carriage, bringing in the fish.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind above heaven bursts into the lake rising above heaven — Breakthrough's decisive moment. A household blessed with fortune finds joy arriving and worry departing. Like wind paired with rain — complementary forces moving together — chariots go out and fish come in. From Small Taming to Breakthrough, the gentle restraint of wind gives way to the lake's irresistible upward surge. Guai's counsel is to distribute blessings downward while residing in virtue. The verse captures this circulation: fortune flows in, anxiety flows out, movement in one direction generates return in another. 'Chariots out, fish in' is a proverbial image of balanced exchange — prosperity not as hoarding but as continuous flow.
