Yilin Verse

水流趍下,遂成東海。求我所有,買鱣與鯉。

Small streams merge into rivers, rivers merge into the great river — never resting day or night, flowing east. Boats carry a thousand loads of fish and shrimp — the wharf is as noisy as a bustling market.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind beneath heaven encounters earth's stubborn closure. This verse is a rewrite; the original reads: 'Water flows downward, finally forming the eastern sea. Seek what I possess — buy sturgeon and carp.' Streams converge into rivers, rivers into the sea, following nature's inevitable course. The imagery is commercial abundance: one who possesses fish for sale meets eager buyers. Yet from Coming to Meet to Standstill, heaven and earth refuse to mingle. The natural flow described in the verse meets a cosmic blockage — abundance exists, but the channels of exchange are severed. What should circulate freely is trapped behind the wall of heaven's withdrawal from earth.
