Yilin Verse
西戎為疾,幽君去室。陳子發難,項伯成就。
The Western Rong bring affliction; the darkened lord abandons his chambers. Chen Zi raises the banner of revolt; Xiang Bo brings it to fruition.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind beneath heaven encounters the darkening of light. The Western Rong invade as a plague upon the realm, and the benighted ruler abandons his chambers. Then a 'Master Chen' raises the standard of revolt, while Xiang Bo brings the enterprise to completion. The verse layers multiple periods of crisis: the Western Rong barbarians threatening Zhou, a ruler driven from power, and figures who exploit chaos to forge new order. Xiang Bo, uncle of Xiang Yu, famously aided Liu Bang at the Hongmen Banquet. From Coming to Meet to Darkening of the Light, brightness sinks into the earth — the wise conceal their brilliance to survive. Gou's encounter here is with raw political violence, navigable only through strategic obscurity.
