Yilin Verse

秋風生哀,花落生悲。公室多難,羊舌氏衰。

Autumn wind begets sorrow; falling blossoms beget grief. The ducal house meets many troubles; the Yangshe clan declines.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind beneath heaven turns autumnal. Autumn winds bring sorrow; falling blossoms breed grief. The ducal house faces many troubles, and the Yangshe clan declines. The Yangshe were a powerful ministerial family in the state of Jin, most famous for the statesman Shu Xiang. By the late Spring and Autumn period, internal feuds and political purges destroyed the clan entirely. The verse pairs natural imagery of seasonal decay with political disintegration — a great family withering like flowers in cold wind. From Coming to Meet to The Family, wind emerges from fire: words must have substance, actions must have constancy. Yet the Yangshe house failed precisely at sustaining family discipline, and the wind that should warm now scatters.
