Yilin Verse
西行求玉,冀得隋璞。反見凶惡,使我驚惑。
Traveling west to seek jade, hoping to find the Marquis of Sui's uncut gem. Instead he meets with evil; it startles and confounds him.

Commentary
Wind from fire sends the family westward in search of jade, hoping to obtain the precious uncut Sui stone — a reference to the famed Sui Pearl, one of antiquity's supreme treasures. But instead of jade, evil is encountered, leaving the traveler shocked and bewildered. The Sui treasure was legendary: the Marquis of Sui once saved a wounded serpent, which returned bearing a luminous pearl. To seek such a treasure and find only horror is a cruel inversion of the legend. From The Family to Coming to Meet, wind moves beneath heaven as an unexpected encounter occurs. Coming to Meet warns of the dark feminine principle rising unbidden; the traveler who expected a treasure instead meets something sinister. Not every encounter is fortunate, and not every westward journey leads to jade.
