Yilin Verse

三人俱行,六目光明。道逢淑女,與我驥子。

Three men travel together; six eyes shine bright. On the road they meet a virtuous woman who gives me a fine young steed.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind beneath heaven sends three travelers upon a bright-eyed journey. Three companions walk together, six eyes shining with clarity, and on the road they meet a fair maiden who gifts them a fine steed. The verse radiates cooperative good fortune — multiple travelers sharing vision, an auspicious encounter producing tangible reward. The 'three men' may allude to the three founding advisors of early Zhou, though the identification is uncertain. From Coming to Meet to Pushing Upward, a tree grows slowly from within the earth: what begins as an encounter among equals develops into steady, organic ascent. Gou's meeting, shared among friends, multiplies into collective elevation.
