Yilin Verse
讚陽上舞,神明生氣。拜禹受福,君施我德。
Praising the yang, dancing above; the spirits stir with living breath. Bowing before Yu to receive blessings, the lord bestows his virtue upon us.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wood grows within the earth, and dancers celebrate the ascending yang with movements that channel the vitality of spirits and gods. Bowing before Yu the Great, they receive his ancient blessing; the sovereign bestows virtue upon the gathered people. The verse evokes a grand ritual scene where sacred dance invokes the energy of legendary rulers — particularly Yu, the flood-tamer who embodies selfless public service and tireless devotion. Heaven over wind, the image of Coming to Meet, sees the ruler issuing commands that reach all four directions. From Pushing Upward to Coming to Meet, the organic ascent reaches the moment of encounter between heaven's decree and the world's reception. Dance and prayer draw sovereign virtue downward into the human realm.
