Yilin Verse

蘇氏發言,韓魏无患。張子馳說,燕齊以安。

Master Su speaks his piece; Han and Wei are freed from peril. Master Zhang gallops forth with argument; Yan and Qi find peace.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wind beneath heaven dispatches the great persuaders. Master Su speaks, and Han and Wei are freed from danger. Master Zhang gallops with his rhetoric, and Yan and Qi find peace. The verse names the two supreme diplomats of the Warring States: Su Qin, architect of the Vertical Alliance uniting six states against Qin, and Zhang Yi, mastermind of the Horizontal Alliance that broke it apart. Together they represent the power of persuasion to reshape the political map. From Coming to Meet to Revolution, fire burns within the lake, transforming its very nature. Gou's encounter here is the encounter of word with power: a single meeting between a persuader and a ruler can overturn an entire geopolitical order.
