Yilin Verse
日月不居,重耳趍舍。遊燕入秦,晉國是霸。
Sun and moon tarry not; Chong'er hastens from lodging to lodging. Roaming through Yan, entering Qin; he becomes hegemon of Jin.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wood grows within the earth as the sun and moon never pause in their courses, and Chong Er hastens from one lodging to another across the states. Wandering through Yan and entering Qin, he returns at last to make Jin the hegemon of the age. Prince Chong Er of Jin spent nineteen years in exile — traversing Di, Qi, Cao, Song, Chu, and finally Qin — before Duke Mu of Qin helped him regain his throne in 636 BC. Lake over mountain, the image of Influence, shows the yielding above stimulating the firm below. From Pushing Upward to Influence, years of patient wandering build the network of relationships that ultimately moves kingdoms. Chong Er's exile was not wasted time but the slow accumulation of alliances and resilience.
