Yilin Verse

驕胡犬形,造惡作凶。无所能成,還自滅身。

Fierce flames burn the forest — the fire scorches itself. The venomous snake bites its own tail — the tail chars first. Forging a sword to harm all travelers — the blade snaps back and pierces his own waist.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wood grows within the earth, but the original verse reveals a figure of barbarous, dog-like shape — arrogant, foreign, and violent — who creates evil and destruction yet achieves nothing of lasting worth, and ultimately destroys himself. The 'proud Hu of canine form' conjures a northern raider whose cruelty is directed outward but whose ruin comes from within. Earth over fire, the image of Darkening of the Light, buries brightness underground where it cannot be seen. From Pushing Upward to Darkening of the Light, the ascending impulse is driven beneath the surface and extinguished. The tyrant who rose through brute force finds his own savagery consumes him — destruction carried far enough inevitably devours its own source.
