Yilin Verse

拜跪贊辭,无益於尤。大夫頑嚚,使我生憂。

Kneeling and bowing with words of praise, yet it avails nothing against reproach. The minister is obstinate and deaf; he fills my heart with sorrow.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wood grows within the earth, but bowing, kneeling, and offering polished words of praise bring no benefit whatsoever against real misfortune. The minister is obstinate and deaf to reason, causing the ruler unending worry and grief. Wind emerging from fire, the image of the Family, prescribes that words carry substance and actions maintain constancy — the household runs on genuine communication. Yet here the household is corrupted by a stubborn official whose foolishness mocks the very rituals meant to sustain domestic order. From Pushing Upward to the Family, organic growth should mature into a well-ordered home. Instead, empty ceremony meets unyielding stupidity: the ascending wood enters a house where warmth has been replaced by the smoke of futile ritual.
