Yilin Verse

辰以降婁,王駕巡狩。廣佑施惠,萬國咸喜。

In the season of Jianglou, the king's chariot tours the realm. Broadly bestowing aid and grace, the ten thousand states all rejoice.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wood grows within the earth as the celestial lodges align at the Descending Lou constellation, and the king sets forth on a grand royal inspection tour of his realm. Grace is dispensed broadly and kindness extended to every quarter; the ten thousand states rejoice in unison. The royal progress — the ancient institution of the Son of Heaven touring his domain to observe conditions and bestow favor — represents sovereign virtue made visible across the land. Fire over lake, the image of Opposition, holds two unlike forces in productive tension. From Pushing Upward to Opposition, the ascending impulse encounters difference and transforms it into complementarity. The touring king unifies opposing regions not by erasing difference but by bestowing grace upon each nature.
