Yilin Verse

彭離濟東,遷廢上庸。狠戾无節,失其寵功。

Pengli is banished east, exiled and cast down to Shangyong. Cruel and without restraint, he loses his favor and merit.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wood grows within the earth, but Peng Li, King of Jidong under the Han dynasty, is relocated and stripped of his fief at Shangyong. Brutal, licentious, and unrestrained, he squanders his favor and loses every achievement. According to the Han Shu, Peng Li held his kingdom for twenty-nine years before being deposed for repeatedly killing people in secret hunts. Lake over heaven, the image of Breakthrough, shows accumulated force that must be released decisively. From Pushing Upward to Breakthrough, the ascending figure reaches a height from which the fall becomes catastrophic. Peng Li's elevation was real, but his savagery triggered the decisive break that cast him down from power forever.
