Yilin Verse

日就月將,昭明有功。靈臺歡賞,膠鼓作人。

Day by day advancing, month by month progressing; shining brightly with achievement. At the Lingtai they rejoice and admire; drums resound, stirring all the people.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Wood grows within the earth, progressing daily and advancing monthly, with luminous achievements shining bright for all to see. At the Sacred Terrace, people rejoice and admire the spectacle; drums covered in glue-hardened hide beat out rhythms that inspire and organize the people. King Wen's Ling Tai — the observatory and audience hall celebrated in the Shijing — represents the ruler's virtue made architecturally manifest, a place where commoners and nobles alike gather in shared festivity and civic purpose. Water over lake, the image of Limitation, counsels measured regulation and proper boundaries. From Pushing Upward to Limitation, the organic ascent achieves its lasting form through structure and discipline. Growth without limit becomes chaos, but growth within proper measure becomes civilization.
