Commentary

A lake without water: all appears bright and open, yet the guest is neither loyal nor trustworthy. Words twist and turn, calling black white and white black. The verse indicts a smooth-tongued deceiver who presents a polished exterior while speaking falsehoods, the classic flatterer whose every reversal of truth deepens the oppression of honest men. From Oppression to Fellowship, heaven and fire share the sky, and the gentleman distinguishes kindred from strangers. The transformation is pointed: true fellowship requires sorting the genuine from the counterfeit. When duplicity infiltrates the inner circle, the fire's clarity must burn away pretense. Fellowship forged without this discernment is merely oppression wearing a friendlier mask.
