Yilin Verse

桃夭少葉,婚悅宜家。君子樂胥,長利止居。

The peach tree is young with few leaves, yet the marriage brings delight and harmony. The gentleman finds happiness; lasting fortune in a settled home.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

A lake without water, but a young peach tree blossoms with few leaves, signaling a joyful marriage and a harmonious household. The verse directly quotes the Shijing ode 'Tao Yao': 'The peach tree is young and elegant; this young lady goes to her new home and will order well her chamber and house.' The gentleman takes pleasure in his domestic happiness and finds lasting benefit in settled dwelling. From Oppression to Contemplation, wind moves over the earth, and the ancient kings surveyed their domains to educate the people. The intimate joy of a new marriage opens into a wider view: personal contentment becomes the foundation from which one observes and understands the world. Domestic harmony radiates outward as civilizing influence.
