Yilin Verse

襄送季女,至於蕩道。齊子旦夕,留連久處。

Duke Xiang escorts the youngest daughter, arriving at the road of Dang. The son of Qi lingers morning and evening, detained and long delayed.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

A lake without water marks entrapment. Duke Xiang escorts his younger sister, a 'season-born daughter,' as far as Tangdao for her marriage. But a prince of Qi lingers morning and evening, delaying the journey indefinitely. The Zuo Zhuan records several instances where marriage processions between states became pretexts for diplomatic entanglement or romantic dalliance, disrupting what should have been straightforward alliances. The escort becomes a snare, the road a place of lingering rather than passage. From Oppression to Conflict, heaven and water move in contrary directions. What began as a ritual obligation devolves into crossed purposes and mutual suspicion. The journey stalls because desire and duty pull against each other, and no arbitration resolves the impasse.
