Yilin Verse

鼻移在項,枯葉傷生。下朽上榮,家擾不寧,失其金城。

The nose shifted to the nape; withered leaves harm the living. Below rotten, above flourishing; the household is troubled and restless, losing its fortress of gold.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Fire within the lake transforms into earth above the lake — Approach, where authority draws near. The nose has migrated to the back of the neck; withered leaves wound the living branch. Below rots while above still flourishes; the household is in turmoil, and its golden fortress is lost. Everything here is inverted: the nose, organ of discernment, sits where it cannot function. Dead foliage chokes the living shoot. The foundation decays while the crown appears healthy — a false prosperity concealing structural collapse. From Revolution to Approach, the dark resonance emerges: authority approaching a disordered system only hastens its ruin. The golden stronghold falls because its own structure is upside down.
