Yilin Verse
冬無藏冰,春陽不通。陰流為賊,國被其殃。
In winter, no ice is stored; in spring, the yang cannot flow. Yin becomes a hidden thief; the state bears its ruin.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Clouds above heaven shift to thunder bursting from the earth in Enthusiasm. Winter passes without stored ice; spring's yang energy cannot circulate properly. When the seasonal rhythm breaks, yin flows unchecked and becomes pestilential, and the state suffers calamity. The verse draws on the Liji's 'Monthly Ordinances': the Son of Heaven must store ice in winter for summer rituals; failure to do so disrupts the cosmic order. Ice storage was governance made tangible — a ruler who neglects seasonal duties invites natural and political disorder alike. From Waiting to Enthusiasm, the nourishing clouds should have become joyous thunder, but mismanaged timing turns celebration into catastrophe.
