Yilin Verse

謀恩拜德,東歸吾國。慷慨宴笑,歡樂有福。

Planning grace, offering thanks; returning east to our homeland. Generous feasting and laughter; joy and happiness bring blessing.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Clouds above heaven become wind rising from fire — the warm radiance of The Family. Planning gratitude and honoring virtue, one returns east to one's homeland. Generous feasting and laughter fill the homecoming with joy and blessing. The verse reads as the happy resolution of an exile or mission: favors acknowledged, debts of honor repaid, and the traveler welcomed home with banquets. 'East' is the direction of return and origin. From Waiting to The Family, patient nourishment transforms into the warmth that emanates from a well-ordered household: wind from fire means the inner flame of domestic harmony radiating outward as influence. The one who waited now comes home to the place where nourishment is most genuine.
