Yilin Verse
祝伯善言,能事鬼神。辭祈萬歲,使君延年。
Lord Zhu’s fine words; he can serve the ghosts and spirits. His prayers invoke ten thousand years; granting the lord long life.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Clouds above heaven meet the lake drained of water in Oppression. Yet the verse finds solace in the sacred: 'Invocator Bo excels at eloquent speech, able to serve spirits and gods. His prayers and petitions invoke ten thousand years of life, extending the lord's lifespan.' The 祝伯 (Invocator Bo) is a priestly official whose words bridge human and divine. Even within oppression — the dried lake that cannot sustain — ritual language maintains the connection to heaven. From Waiting to Oppression, nourishment meets its limit: the waters have receded and physical resources are exhausted. What remains is the power of articulate prayer — words addressed to the unseen that transcend material scarcity and invoke blessings beyond the reach of ordinary means.
