Yilin Verse

鳥鳴既端,一呼三顛。動搖東西,危慄不安。疾病無患。

The bird cries from its perch; one call, three tumbles. Shaken and tossed east and west; trembling and uneasy. Yet the illness brings no lasting harm.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Clouds above heaven settle into water upon the lake — Limitation's measured restraint. A bird's cry comes sharp and clear, then one call triggers three tumbles. Shaken east and west, one trembles in fearful unease. Yet the final phrase reverses everything: 'illness — no harm.' The verse enacts the experience of limitation itself: alarm, disorientation, the sensation of losing control — followed by the discovery that the crisis was smaller than it felt. The bird's cry is the signal that initiates panic, but panic does not equal destruction. From Waiting to Limitation, nourishment learns its proper measure: water upon the lake defines how high the water may rise. Fear sharpens attention, and the illness that seemed mortal proves manageable within bounds.
