Yilin Verse
三人北行,大見光明。道逢淑女,與我驥子。
Three men journey north; they meet great radiance. On the road they encounter a fair maiden; she bestows upon me a fine colt.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder doubled meets earth over mountain: shock transformed into modesty. Three men journey northward and encounter great radiance. On the road they meet a virtuous woman who presents them with a fine steed. The 'three men heading north' may allude to the tradition of King Wen's ministers — often identified as the Duke of Zhou, Taigong, and the Duke of Shao — traveling to establish Zhou governance. The virtuous woman offering a horse suggests recognition and support arriving unsought. From The Arousing to Modesty, mountain hidden within earth, the verse shows how thunder's bold initiative, when met with genuine humility, attracts unexpected gifts. Those who travel with purpose but without arrogance find the way illuminated and allies appearing unbidden.
