Yilin Verse
陽明失時,陰凝為憂。主君哀泣,喪其元侯。
Yang's brightness loses its season; yin congeals into sorrow. The sovereign lord weeps in grief; he has lost his chief lord.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder doubled yields to mountain over thunder: shock stilled into the care of nourishment. The bright yang force loses its season, and yin congeals into sorrow. The lord weeps in grief, mourning the loss of his chief minister. When yang — the active, life-giving principle — fails to arrive at its proper time, yin darkness consolidates and sorrow overtakes the court. The loss of the 'chief minister' (元侯) suggests a pillar of governance removed, leaving the ruler bereft. From The Arousing to Nourishment, mountain above thunder, the verse reveals the cost when nourishment fails. Nourishment depends on timing: the mountain holds the thunder still so that life can be sustained below. When the sustaining force is lost, even the ruler is reduced to tears.
