Commentary
Thunder doubled transforms into thunder over heaven: shock intensified into Great Power. Xiatai and Youli — the prisons where Tang and Wen endured their trials. The Ghost Marquis was made into meat paste; the people of Qi rejoiced. According to the Shiji, King Zhou of Shang imprisoned King Tang's predecessor at Xiatai and King Wen at Youli. The 'Ghost Marquis' (鬼侯, also called Marquis of Jiu) was one of the Three Dukes who was ground into meat sauce by King Zhou for displeasing him. Yet from this nadir of tyranny, the Zhou people drew strength. From The Arousing to Great Power, thunder atop heaven, the verse celebrates how the unjust suffering of the righteous generates the explosive energy that overthrows the oppressor. Power forged in prison is the most dangerous kind.
