Yilin Verse

踐履危難,脫阨去患。入福喜門,見悔大君。

Treading through peril and hardship; escaping danger, leaving calamity behind. Entering the gate of blessed joy; meeting the great lord.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Thunder doubled meets wind over fire: shock refined into the warmth of The Family. Treading through danger and hardship, one escapes peril and leaves disaster behind. Entering the gate of blessings and joy, one is received by a great lord. The arc is a clean reversal: the first half describes traversing a landscape of hazards, the second half arrival at a place of welcome. 'Seeing a great lord who shows favor' suggests an audience with a ruler who recognizes one's trials. From The Arousing to The Family, wind emerging from fire, words carry substance and actions maintain constancy. The verse traces the journey from external chaos to domestic order — the household that provides shelter after the storm, where warmth radiates outward as steady influence.
