Yilin Verse
隨時逐便,不失利門。多獲得福,富於封君。
In spring buy seeds, in autumn harvest gold. Buy low in the eastern market, sell in the western. Riding the wind with raised sail, knowing when to advance and retreat — ten years of common cloth exchanged for purple robes.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind over mountain transitions to mountain over wind: gradual development matures into the remedial work of Decay. The original verse reads: 'Follow the times and seize convenience; miss no gate of profit. Gain much, receive blessings, richer than an enfeoffed lord.' This is the merchant who reads the market as a farmer reads the seasons: buying when prices are low, selling when they peak, adjusting course with every shift in the wind. From Development to Work on the Decayed, the patient growth of the source hexagram meets the target's mandate to renovate what has deteriorated. The mountain shelters the wind below, creating conditions for renewal. The merchant's talent lies in recognizing decay as opportunity and timing his intervention with gradual precision.
