Yilin Verse
海隅遼右,福祿所至。柔嘉蒙祉,九夷何咎?
The sea's far corner, Liao to the right; where fortune and blessing arrive. Gentle and fine, receiving heaven's favor; what blame upon the nine Yi tribes?
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Wind over mountain meets thunder above lake: gradual development leads to the Marrying Maiden. To the far northeast, by the sea's edge, blessings and prosperity arrive. Gentle and virtuous, one receives heaven's grace. What fault is there among the nine Yi peoples? The verse celebrates the reach of civilization to its farthest borders: even the distant maritime frontier and the Yi peoples are embraced by fortune. From Development to the Marrying Maiden, thunder stirs above the lake, the younger sister given in marriage as a diplomatic bond. The gradual extension of culture and virtue, reaching outward to the periphery, mirrors the marriage alliance that binds distant peoples to the center. Development's patient expansion finds its consummation in the union that bridges cultures.
