Yilin Verse
馬服長股,宜行善市。蒙祐諧偶,獲利五倍。終日在市,詰朝獲利。既享嘉福,得之以義。
A long-shanked horse in service, fit for travel and fine trade. Blessed with a harmonious match, gaining profit fivefold. All day at market, by morning the profit arrives. Having enjoyed such blessings, one obtains them through righteousness.
— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE
Commentary
Thunder and fire illuminate Abundance, and the verse is a merchant's blessing. A horse fit for service with long legs, suited for travel and good at market. Under heaven's protection, a harmonious match is found, and profits multiply fivefold. All day in the marketplace, by morning the gains materialize. One enjoys fine fortune, obtained through righteousness. This extended commercial verse celebrates legitimate prosperity — profits not seized but earned through diligence and proper conduct. From Abundance to Return, thunder rests within the earth: the merchant's cycle of going out and returning with profit mirrors Return's image of the solstice, when yang re-enters the world. Wealth circulates and comes back, grounded in virtue.
