Yilin Verse

雨師娶婦,黃巖季子。成禮既婚,相呼南去。膏潤下土,年歲大有。

The Rain Master takes a bride, the youngest child of Yellow Cliff. Rites completed and wed, they call to each other going south. Rich moisture soaks the earth; the harvest year is bountiful.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Thunder and fire join in Abundance, and the Rain Master takes a bride once more — this time the youngest son of Huangyan. The rites are completed, the marriage sealed, and together they depart southward. Unctuous rain soaks the earth below, yielding a year of great harvest. This verse nearly duplicates 55-8, with 'youngest son' (季子) replacing 'youngest daughter' (季女), suggesting a textual variant or parallel tradition. The divine wedding's agricultural outcome remains the same: sky meets earth through ritual union, producing fertile abundance. From Abundance to Great Exceeding, the lake submerges the trees: the rain's generosity pushes beyond normal limits. Great Exceeding warns that even beneficial excess strains the structure, but here the surplus yields bounty rather than collapse.
