Yilin Verse

三鳥飛來,自到逢時。俱行先至,多得大利。

Three birds fly hither, arriving of their own accord at the right time. Traveling together, arriving first; gaining great profit in abundance.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Thunder and fire converge in Abundance, and three birds arrive auspiciously. Flying in together, they arrive at the right moment. Traveling as one, the foremost reaches first, and great profits are obtained. The three birds may represent messengers, opportunities, or talented men arriving simultaneously. Their timing is perfect — they come 'at the appointed moment' (逢時), and the one who leads gains the most. From Abundance to Coming to Meet, heaven's wind blows below, spreading the royal decree to all directions: the birds' arrival mirrors the sudden appearance of an unexpected encounter. Coming to Meet warns of the yin force rising unbidden, yet here the encounter is fortunate — opportunity arrives on its own, and the prepared one seizes it first.
