Yilin Verse

雨師娶婦,黃巖季女。成禮既婚,相呼南去。膏潤下土,年歲大有。

The Rain Master takes a bride, the youngest daughter of Yellow Cliff. Rites completed and wed, they call to each other going south. Rich moisture soaks the earth; the harvest year is bountiful.

— Jiao Yanshou, Yilin (Forest of Changes), 1st century BCE

Commentary

Thunder and fire join in Abundance, and the verse presents a cosmic wedding. The Rain Master takes a bride — the youngest daughter of Huangyan. The rites are completed, the marriage sealed, and together they depart southward. Their union brings unctuous rain that soaks the earth, yielding a year of great harvest. The Rain Master (雨師) is an ancient weather deity; his marriage to a mountain maiden represents the union of sky and earth that produces fertile rain. The southward journey follows the prevailing winds of the growing season. From Abundance to Holding Together, water upon earth, the image of gathering and bonding: divine marriage becomes communal prosperity, as heaven's moisture meets earth's receptivity in perfect accord.
